Online Bill Payment Dubai UAE

Armchair comfort, avoiding traffic jams, readily available status updates…. whatever be the reasons… online bill payment is continually increasing and is projected to further increasing substantially.

Click Here to view interesting insights on the topic which also states that is not just baby boomers who engage in online bill payments but also a large percentage of those who are above 45 years of age.

Prosum fzc is working towards being an aggregator of bill payments in UAE – the first-ever non-government, non-bank initiative of its kind in UAE. The added benefit of paying directly through one’s bank’s accounts is expected to further increase acceptance and usage of online bill payments in United Arab Emirates.

PCI DSS for Secure Online Payments

Do your company store or even process credit card data – whether for online payments or even at physical locations?

If so, you would do well to get certified, or at the very least conform, to PCI DSS.

PCI DSS stands for Payment Cards Industry Data Security Standards. Primarily, it readily provides you the check-list for all the related best practices such as what data to store, where to store and how to store. It also provides the physical security levels required at the hosting center. What should also matter to the merchant is that, once certified, you come under the “Safe Harbor” which protects from any subsequent financial or repudiation risk.

“Foreign” fee applied for credit card transactions

U.S. online shoppers hit with ‘foreign’ fee reads an article which brings to our attention the fact that credit card owners could now be subjected to a 2 percent additional charge on each transaction conducted with a foreign company — even if the customer never leaves the U.S. and even if the transaction is completed in U.S. dollars.

Online shopping in UAE peaks in fourth quarter

There are some who still vow never to make a purchase online. And there are others who confirm that online payment facility for internet shopping is the best thing that has ever happened.

Which group do you belong to?

Read on to see it from the eyes of Suzanne Fenton, Staff Reporter at Gulf News

Dubai: Per capita online shopping in the UAE reached $1,193 (Dh4,378) in the fourth quarter of 2008, the highest in the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa region, according to the latest MasterCard survey.

Online shoppers made an average of 3.6 purchases in the four quarter of 2008, compared with 3.1 during the same quarter in 2007.

Surprisingly, not only have UAE consumers shopped more frequently despite the economic situation, with the exception of Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong, all other markets showed an increased intention for future online shopping compared to a year ago.

Shoppers in the UAE conducted 26 per cent of their overall shopping online, and 59 per cent of them splashed out on airline tickets – the number one purchase according to the report.

Shopping is something of a national pastime in the UAE, especially in the heat of the summer months. Dubai has thrown itself wholeheartedly into the glittery world of retail, reflected in the vast acres of shopping malls that sprawl all over the country.

So does this mean the popularity of online shopping increases during a market downturn?

“In mature markets this is probably true because people look for better bargains and can make comparisons of the deals. However, in a market like ours, online shopping … is in the initial phase of maturing. It is the start of the curve. That probably is a bit of a barrier, but the proportion of people browsing online to find out information is increasing,” Himanshu Vashishtha, director of consumer research for the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan at Nielsen, said.

Around 37 per cent of people surveyed bought home appliances and electronic products and 30 per cent paid for hotel accommodation online.

Do you shop online? Why do you think online shopping is becoming more popular? Are you concerned about the security of your personal information when shopping online?

The Payments Council in the UK has announced the publication of The Way We Pay 2009: UK Cash & Cash Machines, providing the latest data on how UK consumers are obtaining and using cash and how this is forecast to change 2008 cash and cash machine data shows:71% of all cash acquired by consumers came from cash machines

2.9 billion cash machine withdrawals were made last year – equivalent to 91 withdrawals per second

Cash payment volumes are forecast to fall by 27% over the next 10 years

If current trends persist, next year for the first time debit card spending will overtake cash spending by value in the UK.

Whilst cash spending continues to remain relatively flat, the number of cash machine withdrawals continues to rise and is forecast to peak in 2011. Consumers are increasingly using cash machines for withdrawing cash, where previously they would have withdrawn money in bank branches or at post offices; five years ago only 54% of cash came from cash machines, last year 71% of cash was acquired that way. This shift has been driven by an increase in the availability and numbers of cash machines as well as the migration of payment for state benefits and pensions from cash and girocheque to automated methods.

The report also reveals that in 2008 consumers made 22.4 billion cash payments, amounting to a total value of £267 billion, and that UK cash machines paid out £192 billion in 2.9 billion transactions. By contrast, in 2008, debit cardholders made 5.5 billion purchases and spent £247 billion on their cards. Although consumer cash spending still amounts to more than that by any other single payment method, this may not remain the case for long – in 2010 consumer debit card spending is forecast to outstrip cash spending by value for the first time.

Edwin Latter, scheme director of Link said: “The report provides a clear picture of the nation’s usage and acquisition of cash, revealing how often we withdraw cash as well as the types of places where we make cash payments and what we buy there. For example, two-thirds of cash payments, by volume, last year were made in shops, and 5% of all the cash payments spent there were on entries to the National Lottery.

“Even though the report predicts that cash transactions by value could be overtaken by debits cards for the first time next year, no-one is claiming that the end of cash is nigh. By volume cash still remains king, and will remain so until a viable alternative for low value transactions is widely available.”

MasterCard Mobile MoneySend Platform Set To Go Live

MasterCard Offers Issuers in the U.S. the Ability to Provide Customers Person-to-Person Payments Using their Mobile Phones

Purchase, NY, May 13, 2009 MasterCard today announced that their fully-integrated, on-demand person-to-person (P2P) mobile payment platform for issuers in the United States is set to go live later this month. With this new platform, MasterCard participating bank customers will be able to offer Mobile MasterCard MoneySend™ P2P payments to their customers. Mobile MoneySend is the breakthrough consumer payment platform that provides a better way to send and receive funds via SMS-text, mobile browser, mobile applet or an Internet PC. Initially, consumers will be able to use MoneySend with a MasterCard prepaid card issued by The Bancorp Bank and then link it to their mobile phone number to send or receive money.

As additional issuers enroll for the platform, their customers will be able to use MoneySend with their everyday accounts, including MasterCard debit, credit, prepaid or checking, as determined by their issuer. Once registered for MoneySend, consumers have the flexibility of directly, easily and securely transferring funds to and from family and friends through their mobile phone, eliminating the need to write or cash checks, visit ATMs, or wire money domestically.

Senders initiate transfers to any domestic mobile phone number via SMS message, mobile web browser or a downloadable MoneySend application. Upon initiation of the transfer, the sender approves the request by entering the MoneySend mobile PIN which only the accountholder knows. Then the recipient receives a text message confirmation of the transfer (for pre-registered users) or that the transfer is pending (for yet to be registered users). The funds can then be accessed by the recipient through an account designated during the registration process. Initially, this will be a prepaid account with The Bancorp Bank. These funds are then available for access through the mobile phone. If the consumer has a MasterCard card associated with the account the funds can also be accessed at traditional points of interaction, including ATMs, over-the-counter at a bank branch, or at the point-of-sale.

“Our existing MoneySend platform and Obopay’s connectivity to mobile networks has allowed us to bring a simple solution for mobile P2P payments to consumers in the U.S. in partnership with our customer banks,” said Art Kranzley, Chief Emerging Technology Officer, MasterCard Worldwide. “We know that consumers are now constantly connected, whether in front of their computer screens or on the go with their mobile phones that are always there and always on. Since the MoneySend platform supports P2P payments through any PC or mobile device, we are able to offer a consistent transaction experience in both online and mobile channels for consumers in the U.S.”

Kranzley added, “The availability of the MoneySend P2P platform in the U.S. builds upon the success we’ve seen with MoneySend in the Asia Pacific Middle East Africa region, where it is available in 17 countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India and the Philippines. MasterCard is continually expanding both the number of markets in which the platform is offered and the channels through which consumers can access it.”

“We know that consumers in the U.S. are looking for better ways to send money to their friends and family quickly, securely and easily,” said Terrence Crowley, Senior Vice President with The Bancorp Bank. “Leveraging MasterCard’s MoneySend platform, Bancorp is excited to be able to offer a prepaid solution that makes person-to-person money transfer via mobile phones an attractive opportunity for our cardholders.”

“With consumers clamoring for services that fit their mobile lifestyle, we’re happy to work with MasterCard, a company that has long embraced the enormous potential to turn every mobile device into a payment device,” said Obopay Senior Vice President Michael E. Diamond. “Through our partnership with MasterCard, we’re giving millions of people the means to easily and securely send money to family, friends and loved ones.”

“Nokia has long been a leader in developing mobile devices that offer access to mobile payments and is excited to see this latest innovation which takes mobile payment services to the next level in the U.S.,” said Teppo Paavola, Vice President, Corporate Business Development, Nokia. “We believe that industry collaboration is vital to the success of mobile payments and, together with Obopay and MasterCard, we look forward to further innovation in this area.”

Driving Mobile Innovation for the Industry

MasterCard continues to demonstrate its commitment to innovation in the mobile channel, as consumers increasingly seek to access on their mobile phones the online experiences they have on PCs, and use their phones for much more than telecommunications. MasterCard is using its unique perspective and wealth of experience to offer new solutions that meet the needs of an increasingly mobile society while catalyzing the secular shift away from cash and check to electronic forms of payment.
